Prakash Belawadi was born into a family of theatre artists in Bangalore, Mysore State (now Karnataka). His family, BelavadiNanjundaiah Narayan, was a Kannada theatre star who also worked as a make-up artist and acted in films. His mother, Bhargavi, is a well-known actress in film and theatre.

Belawadi received his primary and secondary education at MahilaSeva Samaja and National High School, respectively. Later, he attended National College in Bangalore for a pre-university program. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in 1983.

He gained prominence after playing Bala in Shoojit Sircar’s Hindi Madras Café, which also starred John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, and Raashi Khanna. Following that, he appeared in films such as Youngistaan, Talvar, Uttama Villain, Wazir, and others. He rose to prominence in Bollywood after portraying the role of George Kutty in the Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift. Belawadi has worked on almost 200 films and plays during his 40-year career.
