S.P. Balasubrahmanyam Biography
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam’s full name was Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam. He was also known as SPB or Balu. He was an Indian playback singer, music director, television presenter, actor, and producer who worked in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam movies. He was considered to be one of the best singing legends the country has ever produced.
He was born on 4 June 1946 in Nellore, Madras Presidency, British India (now called Andhra Pradesh). He died on 25 September 2020 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was 74 years old when he died.
Family Background and Wife
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam’s family was a Tamil Brahmin family. His father S.P. Sambamurthy was a Harikatha artist who acted in plays and his mother’s name was Sakunthalamma. He had two brothers and five sisters among which one is S.P. Sailaja.
Balasubrahmanyam’s wife’s name was Savithri. They have two children, a daughter named Pallavi and a son named S.P.B. Charan who is also a playback singer and film producer.

He made his debut as a playback singer on 15 December 1966 with Sri SriSriMaryadaRamanna.

He made his acting career debut with the movie PellanteNoorellaPanta in 1969. He has appeared in several films. Some of S.P. Balasubrahmanyam movies include Mohammad Bin Tughlaq, PakkintiAmmayi, Prema, KeladiKanmani, Sigaram, Bharathan, MuddinaMavva, Pavitra Bandham, Nandhini, Jolly, Maya, Devullu, Indra, April Maadhathil, Mayabazar, Naanayam, Shakti, Mithunam, MooneMoonuVarthai, Devdas and many more.
He has also worked on Television. He hosted and judged the Telugu music reality TV show PaduthaTheeyaga. He had also hosted and judged Kannada music reality TV show Ede ThumbiHaaduvenu. His some other shows include PaadalaniUndi, EndaroMahanubahvulu and Swarabhishekam.
Awards and Achievements
He has won six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, 25 Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards for his works in Telugu films, and several other State Films Awards from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, he won the Filmfare Award and six Filmfare Awards South. In 2012, he received the state NTR National Award for his contribution to Indian cinema, and in 2016, he was honored with Silver Peacock Medal as Indian Film Personality of the year. He was also a recipient of Padma Shri (2001), Padma Bhushan (2011), and Padma Vibhushan (2021) from the Government of India.

On 25 September 2020, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam died in Chennai. He was hospitalized for over a month because of the complications due to covid-19.
