Sarah Gordy, MBE who was born in September 1976 is a British actress. She is affected with Down syndrome. She is most recognized for her performances in The A Word as Katie Thorne, Strike: The Silkworm as Orlando Quine, and Upstairs Downstairs as Lady Pamela Holland on BBC. She has also appeared in Call the Midwife, Holby City, and Doctors episodes. In addition to these TV series, she has appeared in short films, radio plays, advertisements, and several theater performances. She was the first woman with Down syndrome to be awarded an MBE and the first person with Down syndrome to earn an honorary degree from a UK institution in 2018. She was born in London to a British mother and an American father and has lived in both countries.

Catherine is Sarah’s younger sister. Sarah’s mother, Jane Gordy, serves as her theatre coach, traveling with her and assisting her with her lines. Gordy lives in the East Sussex town of Lewes. She enjoys both dancing and working out. She volunteers at the local British Heart Foundation charity shop when she is not acting. Sarah is a Mencap celebrity ambassador and Circus Starr patron. Sarah was named Patron of the Cutting Edge Theatre Company in Scotland in 2019.

Career of Sarah Gordy
Gordy’s first professional acting role was as Jessica Bain in “Walls of Jericho” on the ITV television series Peak Practice (Series 10, Episode 11). She went on to play a variety of different parts on television and in the theater. Lady Pamela was the long-lost sister of Sir Hallam, the main character. Part of her part was intended to reflect 1930s views on disability. Her role debuted in the third installment of the three-part drama. Lady Pamela appeared as a regular in the second season, which aired in February 2012.

Gordy made history in 2014 when she played a key role without a handicap in Crocodiles at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. She has appeared in a number of theatre productions, including Lisa Evans’ Once We Were Mothers, which she saw at the New Vic in Newcastle under Lyme and again at The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond. She appeared in the two-person piece Into the Blue at London’s Arcola Theatre. She starred in Hijinx Theatre’s touring production of Seize the Day and has also performed with The Theatre Centre and Kazzum Theatre.
Sarah Gordy has also done a great deal of modeling. She is one of the models in the continuing Radical Beauty Project, which aims to transform people’s perceptions about Down Syndrome. Rankin shot her for Mencap’s #HereIAm ad. She worked with Richard Bailey on his award-winning After Vermeer series for the Down Syndrome Association’s Shifting Perspectives project.
Sarah Gordy performed “The Rite Re-evisioned” at the Royal Opera House in March 2019 with Culture Device Dance Project and Royal Ballet performers. Culture Device re-enacted the dance for the film “The Rite,” which was nominated for a Fashion Film Award.
Sarah Gordy joins the cast of the BBC drama series The A Word for the third season in 2019. The third season of The A Word premiered in May 2020, with Ralph and Katie’s narrative culminating in their wedding and move-in together. The BBC announced in August 2020 that favorite characters Ralph and Katie will receive their own spin-off series.
